This week I've learned I have lots to learn from my students!
And the best thing is: when they realize we are interested and engaged, they decide to engage too!
Many times I was there teaching and complaining about their attitude, lack of interest and participation…
Oftentimes I would get to the teachers’ room and say: “These teens are so aloof, how disgusting…”
It’s amazing to see how things can change when we change!
The teacher’s enthusiasm can be contagious! This phenomenon can be compared to that of the yawning…
When the teacher is bored, students will eventually be…
The very fact I’m also engaged in the activities gives it a special taste: helping students with no boundaries.
Some students resist the idea. Main excuse: no time!
But if the quest for knowledge is challenging, then, we will manage time more effectively and find a way to engage!
Don’t you guys also think enthusiasm is contagious?

Hi Helô,
ReplyDeleteThe fact that we leave our classrooms frustrated because students weren't motivated, didn't engage or simply ingored our efforts to engage them into activities is just a proof that we are only humans not wizards with magic wands who can turn boredom into fun instantly. We all have such days, but as long as such days are but few I think we are OK.
Students simply expect that we should do things that would attract their attention. If we don't do it, they won't do it either. So, we mustn't stop trying. Trial and error, one of the best ways to test our ideas, improve them and use them to achieve our goals.
Reading new materials, commenting on experiences and opinions, trying new things together is one way to keep the "wheel" running.

Hi Helo,
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more! Enthusiasm is contagious! However sometimes can be a bit difficult to keep enthusiasm for long periods, but what we shouldn't do is to stop looking for things that engage and challenge us and others.
Also, all your comments are always enthusiastic and contagious!
ReplyDeleteHi Helô...
ReplyDeleteI think it's only human to feel a bit disappointed at times, as Elgin has commented.I also believe that having this opportunity we are now having is essential to keep growing professionally. I have been learning a lot from all the participants and you are top of this list.
Thank you for adding so much to our course.
Best,
Gilmar
